Based at the Western Australian Maritime
Museum, the project was conceived in an attempt to document in detail the existing
traditional boats of the Sultanate of Oman, to examine the traditional maritime culture,
its language and its people, to preserve a record of the boats and equipment used, and if
possible, save significant examples of various types of vessel. The project has now also
developed a dimension of underwater archaeology, with surveys being made in the hope of
discovering significant ancient artefacts or wreck sites.
The project, which has been running since 1992, has gained support from Earthwatch, the
Royal Navy of Oman, the Ministry of National Heritage and Culture, several Omani
companies, The Australian Research Council, the Western Australian Maritime Museum, the
Historical Association of Oman and many private individuals. Fieldwork is normally
conducted in the months from December through March, and follow-up archival research
continues throughout the year. The project would be pleased to hear from anyone with
similar interests for the exchange of information and ideas.
